Writing For Social Media: WRIT/350 -Discussion Week 2

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

  • Is a blog the best platform for process analysis content?
  • Why might a company create “how to” content?
  • To support your response to the questions above, select a process analysis blog post and process analysis video on the same topic. Was the blog more effective than the video? Why or why not?

Whenever I need to learn how to do something, I first start searching for videos on YouTube. By seeing the process content while having the process explained helps to visualize the process. Also, in the comments section, information might be obtained through some other viewer’s comments. However, for some tasks, a detailed written list to initiate a blog and information from the comment thread is preferable to vlog.

Any company that creates a product whether physical, digital, or any other experience for the customers should create “how to” content to answer any questions that the customer might have, concerning the product or content. The written instructions that come with physical products are often helpful, but oftentimes, those instructions are worthless, especially when the product needs to be assembled by clumsy people like me. I can hardly ever figure out how to assemble things without seeing a video and asking questions. Therefore, a company should always create “how to” content for their products.

Many people have never learned how to fish, but there are many blogs and vlogs to help them learn how. However, there is a lot of information on the internet, demonstrating best methods of fishing. A google search using the key phrase, “how to catch a fist” leads to a page with a video at the top of the search (see video clip below). As I scroll down, more videos appear in the search. A little further down the search results, I find a site with written information, but that is not a blog where someone can ask questions. On the other hand, the videos not only provide a more visual answer to the question, “how to catch a fish”, but they also provide a means for the user to ask questions to the other people who watch the log. For this reason, I would prefer a video over a written blog to help me learn how to catch a fish.
