Advanced Composition-Journals
Derreck Sunderland Tina Miller WRIT/320 July 5, 2021 Final Thoughts on Advanced Composition for the English Student The class Advanced Composition for the English Student, is the most rewarding but challenging class I have taken at the University of Phoenix. The instructor, Tina Miller, takes the time to explain both my good and bad writing skills. The journal assignments are excellent exercises in not only writing but, also, in self-reflection. During the journal assignments, I focused mostly on the errors I had committed in the previous week’s assignments. However, I found working with the groups frustrating. I have never had much success with groups, but such failures can be mostly…

Grammar
I do not remember much about my early school years, but during my middle-school years, I had very little respect for anything academic, especially grammar. As an adult, however, I developed the desire to study foreign languages. Now, I understand and appreciate the need for proper grammar, especially within the written language. I am very aware when someone speaks with improper grammar, but I never correct them. One grammar mistake that many people make is the improper use of the reflexive pronoun. Myself, yourself, themselves, and ourselves are all reflexive pronouns. The proper use of these pronouns occurs when the subject and object of the sentence are the same. For…

The Technocrats vs The Naturalists
The natural death of one’s physical existence is not a problem but a fact of life. Morality cannot have a solution. The manmade death of the environment, on the other hand, is a problem, and, therefore, must have a solution. The problem with finding the solution or solutions to environmental problems arises from the complicated minds of people whose morals and values differ in so many ways. The technocrats, on the one extreme, insist they can offset the negative environmental consequences of technology with more technology. The naturalists, on the other extreme, scream for the absolute and a complete abandonment of technology and a graceful return to the glorious laws…

Reflection On Culture
If, as Socrates claimed, an unexamined life is not worth living (Apology, circa. 399 BCE), then a well-examined life is well worth living. As a sweet child of the 1960s, a rude teenager of the 1970s, and an older, though no wiser, man of the present, I must reflect on how my worldview has changed over the years. I will begin at the beginning when I first became self-aware. My history, geography, education, language, economic class, environment, religion, and societal customs of the first ten years of my self-awareness shall be the focus of my reflection. I became self-aware while living in a small town in rural America where I…

Memoir of Lost Privilege
As a son of a nuclear scientist, mine is a story of lost privilege. Some say that it is all my fault. Well, how can I argue? They are correct! I was not the throwaway child. I threw it away when I ran away. It’s all my fault, but what could anyone expect from a 12-year-old who could not or would not fit in? It all began on a hot summer Saturday back in 1972. The divorce agreement stated that I would only visit my mom on the even weekends. This was an odd weekend, and I had to stay at home with my dad and his new Mormon family.…

What Language Registers to Use
The register of language I would use depends on several factors. If I were trying to explain a technical topic or speaking to someone on an informative level, I would apply a formal register of language. Any topic that would be considered in the genre of technical writing or technical communication should be expressed with a formal register. Short, clearly articulated sentences should be employed in order to ensure clear and concise communication should always be the goal within the formal register. I would use the consultative register while communicating with other professionals whether I have been previously acquainted with them or not. Such communication might take place while talking…

Forced Medication Debate
A debate rages worldwide over forced medication. Although this is the first debate involving forcing people to sign an informed consent form and take an experimental medication that has never been tested before, similar debates regarding forcing people to take medications or other humanmade substances have arisen throughout history. Thus, an examination of the history of the controversy over forced medication is worthwhile. Research on the various disciplines employed in the debate will be insightful, as well. The language and rhetoric used throughout the debate will cast more insight into the complexities of the controversy. Furthermore, a brief analysis of how differing approaches might affect different audiences will also be…

Transformative Learning
How Action Learning and Collaborative Inquiry Produce Transformative Learning Action learning enhances learning by providing the learners with real-world experience through solving problems and learning from the solutions to those problems (CFI Team, 2020). Collaborative inquiry will enhance learning by joining learners together in a common learning environment regulated by the learners (Bell et al., 2010). Combining the two learning strategies will further enhance the learning experience by inspiring the learners to collaborate through interacting and solving real-world problems. This interactive strategy will allow the learners to teach and learn from each other. Reciprocal learning strategies will provide adult learners with the opportunity to practice their innate nature to teach.…

The Lifelong Learning in a Global World
Learning has evolved with the explosion of the internet. Now, anyone with a good internet connection can learn almost anything from anywhere in the world. This global classroom is where I learned most of my knowledge of technology, and I continue to learn from this global classroom. I watch videos, follow the instructions of the video-instructor, and experiment with the technology by creating my own projects. The traits that I apply to become a video-learner include my ability to understand and follow instructions, my courage to deviate from those instructions and conduct experiments, and the wisdom to stand on the shoulders of giants and create my own projects. How I…
